A simple winter tire checklist for Winnipeg

Quick answer: Plan your winter tire change before the first big snowfall. Check tire pressure when the tires are cold, look for damage and ask about tread wear. Good tires help, but you still need to slow down on ice.

When should winter tires go on?
Watch the weather, not just the calendar. Manitoba Public Insurance says to switch when temperatures stay below 7°C. See its winter tire advice. Booking ahead gives you time to ask about tire size, condition and fitting.
Do not wait until your usual morning drive feels slippery. Put a reminder in your phone early in fall. Then check your tires and contact the shop while you still have time to plan.
Check the pressure when tires are cold
Cold weather can lower tire pressure. Use the pressure listed on your car’s door sticker or in its manual. The number on the tire’s side is not the normal target for your car.
Michelin recommends checking pressure regularly and explains how to check cold tire pressure. Use a proper gauge. Follow your manual for the correct cold reading. If a tire keeps losing air, ask the shop to find the cause.
Look at all four tires
While the car is safely parked, look for cuts, bulges or wear that seems uneven. Check each tire, not just the one nearest the driver’s door. If you see damage, ask for advice before using it.
Do not guess the condition from a quick photo. Ask the shop to check tread depth and whether the tires suit your vehicle. Tell it how long you have had them and where they were stored.

What should you bring to a tire visit?
A little planning can save a second trip. Before you leave home:
- Confirm the appointment and which tires you are bringing.
- Tell the shop if the tires are already on wheels.
- Find your wheel-lock key, if your car uses one.
- Mention shaking, pulling or a tire-pressure light.
- Ask what fitting, balancing and any extra checks will cost.
Keep the receipt and any follow-up directions. Ask whether your wheels need a later torque check, and when to return if so. Follow the instructions for your vehicle and the work done.
Common questions
Will winter tires stop all sliding?
No. Leave more space and drive for the road conditions. MPI’s winter road guide also recommends gentle braking and checking the weather before you leave.
